Vision sensors analyze and interpret the street scene even in complex scenarios. Veoneer develops advanced algorithms in-house that power our world-class mono, stereo, and night vision systems.

Veoneer’s pioneering work with camera-based vision systems gives the driver an additional pair of eyes, scanning the vehicle's surroundings for danger. Our in-house developed algorithms allow the cameras to "see" and track objects, warning the driver – and taking action – when the car is in danger of a collision.

Veoneer’s mono vision systems detect objects while enabling autonomous emergency braking. Veoneer’s stereo vision technology improves these functions, while Veoneer’s world-leading night vision systems use infrared cameras to detect temperature differences in tenths of degrees and see 3-4 times further than possible using vehicle headlights.


Mono Vision Systems

Veoneer’s mono vision system is a forward-looking camera mounted behind the windshield, near the rear-view mirror. The image from the camera is interpreted by advanced image processing algorithms that identify objects such as cars, road markings or road signs. The processor can trigger alarms, show graphical information to the driver, and automatically brake the car.

Veoneer’s mono vision systems have received top performance ratings and have enabled our customers to achieve 5-star safety ratings for Euro NCAP 2018. The next generation systems are in development in order to support NCAP 2020.

Stereo Vision Systems

Veoneer’s stereo vision system is based on a pair of highly synchronized cameras that, along with Veoneer’s algorithms, are capable of accurately recognizing pedestrians and other objects in the driver’s view. The stereo vision cameras are mounted on the front windshield behind the rear-view mirror and work up to a distance of 100 meters.

Stereo vision systems are used as a redundant system for forward-looking radars and LiDARs in automated driving systems. Veoneer’s stereo vision systems have been a leading technology in outputting reliable and accurate information of obstacles on the road and free space detection for automated driving systems. Our stereo vision system reacts to any obstacle or object on the road, which fully matches Euro NCAP 2020 requirements.

Night Vision Systems

Veoneer’s night vision system uses an infrared camera mounted in the in the front grille of the vehicle that senses heat differences as sensitive as a tenth of a degree to create a highly detailed thermal image of the world out in front of the vehicle. An onboard computer (ECU) runs custom algorithms to detect animals, pedestrians and cyclists up to 100 meters ahead of the vehicle and reacts in less than 150 milliseconds to detect and highlight animals and pedestrians on the cluster display of the vehicle.

Night vision systems help drivers see objects 3-4 times farther than the vehicle headlight range and improve visibility in fog, smoke and on-coming headlight scenarios.

Veoneer is the single largest supplier of thermal night vision systems in the automotive marketplace. As the leader, we continue to innovate with smaller cameras, increased resolution, pedestrian and animal detection, as well as enhancements to NCAP features like emergency braking. Far infrared cameras are rapidly expanding into the autonomous vehicle space by providing an essential added modality for sensing objects in complex driving situations.
